Now the question that arises here is “What is CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA?“
Cambridge Analytica is a British political consulting firm that works to build some psychological profiles of voters and help its clients win elections or even perform better. Firm started in 2013 , owned by the family of Robert Mercer, an American fund manager. It’s offices are located in London, New York City, and Washington, D.C. What are the allegations that have been imposed?
The company is accused of accessing data by a data analyst from Facebook on the pretext of collecting information on academic purpose.
Facebook too, willingly allowed Aleksandr Kogan, a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge to harvest data from more than 50 million users and later sell the data to Cambridge Analytica. Then Facebook issued a statement clarifying that data breach is “totally false” and Facebook users “gave their consent” when they signed up for apps. It also said- “no systems were infiltrated, and no passwords or sensitive pieces of information were stolen or hacked.”
Let’s know more about the whistle-blower
A former employee of Cambridge analytica, Christopher Wylie said that he needed to expose to the people what are companies actually doing to the personal information and how is that affecting the democratic practice.
He said that Facebook was sorry and certain mistakes have been made and somehow he was unsuccessful in protecting the personal information of its’ users. It also said that in 2014, it limited the abusive apps to get access to that data without the users’ consent.
He remarked that as soon as this breach of trust came into notice, it banned all the apps from social media that belonged to Kogan.
How is brexit linked?
During the Brexit referendum, a digital service linked to Cambridge Analytica received 625,000 euros payment from a pro-brexit campaign organization. A whistleblower claims to carry all necessary evidences regarding the Cambridge analytica involvement.
Even Indian National Congress couldn’t escape from the claws of Facebook Data Scandal !
Whistle-blower Christopher Wylie has now remarked that Congress was a client of Cambridge Analytica. The company has established offices and designated employees, it has worked ‘extensively’ in India.
Wylie has accused the company for using personal information from over 50 million Facebook accounts to influence the elections. He has also said that CA offered to give the applicable written substantiation to the Congress for the same!
